Test results

There's so much choice! Luckily, you can narrow your search once you know what kind of car stereo you want. Do you need 1 din or 2 din? Do you want Bluetooth? Below our test results, we'll help you work through those choices.

During testing, we noticed huge differences in quality. Some brands we had high hopes for were terrible. Other, cheaper models were surprisingly good. One thing is certain: you won't be caught off guard, because we've picked our favorite car stereo in each category.

📏 The difference between 1 DIN and 2 DIN is the size of the front panel. A 1DIN front panel is 5 cm tall. A 2 DIN front panel is 10 cm tall.

Best car stereo in our tests 2026

This is our current pick for the best car stereo. We regularly update this list when prices change or new stereos come out.

1. Sony DSX-A510BD

Sleek design | DAB+ | Bluetooth |

  • Price: ~165

Sony DSX-A510BD

Pioneer and JVC compete fiercely in the car stereo market. And wouldn't you know it, a third brand takes the prize: Sony! Who would have thought? But this stereo is hard to ignore.

DAB+, Bluetooth, multipoint connectivity, NFC: this stereo has it all. And the price stays nice and low. That makes it our clear number 1.

With NFC, just tap your phone against the stereo once to connect via Bluetooth. What a relief! Multipoint Bluetooth also lets you connect 2 devices to your stereo. That's handy if you share 1 car with your partner, for example. You won't have to keep reconnecting via Bluetooth.

Best 2 din car stereo

2. Pioneer SPH-DA230DAB

Top-tier | 2 din | DAB+ | Beautiful design

  • Price: ~350

SPH-DA230DAB

Pioneer has made the SPH-DA230DAB a truly premium product. DAB+ delivers the best sound, of course. At this price, over €300, it really couldn't be left out. The understated black housing looks sleek in any car. The 7 inch screen is razor-sharp. Installation is easy, but if you want to connect your steering wheel controls and other electronics, you can have a professional fit it.

Car stereo

Your phone connects automatically via Bluetooth. You choose what appears on the screen and what doesn't. The stereo has its own Spotify app, so you can keep listening to your music when you get in the car.

All in all, this 2din Pioneer SPH-DA230DAB really is the top pick among car stereos.

Best 1 din car stereo

A 1 din, also called single din, car stereo fits cars with a dashboard radio opening of 5 cm by 18 cm. Some cars have a narrow opening and others a wide one. The narrow opening fits a single DIN stereo.

1 din or 2 din, single din or double din car stereo

3. Pioneer MVH-330DAB

1 DIN | Bluetooth | ARC | DAB+ | Attractive panel in your choice of color

  • Price: ~170

Pioneer MVH-X580DAB

The number 1 on this list is also a 1 DIN. And this Pioneer is very nearly its equal.

ARC is especially useful on this stereo. It makes controlling the stereo from your phone easy. You can adjust the equalizer, subwoofer, loudness and more, including the stereo's color! The ARC app also lets you control the radio and Spotify. You might be thinking: couldn't I already do that over Bluetooth? The difference is that here you're controlling your car stereo's FM radio. With a Bluetooth connection alone, you can listen to radio using your phone's internet connection. You can also adjust your phone's equalizer, but not the stereo's own equalizer. So this is a real improvement that makes the stereo easier to control.

Best car stereo with Bluetooth

You're probably familiar with Bluetooth speakers for playing your favorite music. But Bluetooth is also a must for a car stereo. It lets you make hands-free calls and listen to your favorite Spotify playlist in the car. And you wouldn't want to sit in your car wearing Bluetooth headphones. Lots of car stereos have Bluetooth. But that's not enough for us! We want a car stereo with multipoint & NFC.

Multipoint lets you connect multiple devices via Bluetooth and remembers them. Handy if you share your car: you won't have to keep reconnecting via Bluetooth.

NFC lets you connect your phone to the stereo by tapping it against the stereo once. Handy, quick and easy!

4. Sony DSX-A410BT

Bluetooth | NFC | multipoint | DAB+

  • Price: ~110

Bluetooth car stereo

The Sony DSX-A410BT is ideal if Bluetooth in your car matters to you.

What makes this car stereo stand out for Bluetooth connectivity?

It has multipoint and NFC. Multipoint is ideal if you want the stereo to remember multiple Bluetooth connections. That's handy if you share your car with your partner. You won't have to keep reconnecting via Bluetooth. But when you do want to connect, or your passenger wants to play a song, NFC comes in handy. With NFC, you just tap your phone against the stereo to connect via Bluetooth. No hassle. Just a quick tap.

Best car stereo with a flip-out screen

If your dashboard has a single din, also called 1 din, opening, you might think a large screen is out of the question. Not so! A flip-out screen gives your 1 din stereo a large display for navigation and radio controls. You don't have to rebuild your whole dashboard to create a 2 DIN opening. You keep your 1 DIN opening of 5cm by 18 cm and choose a stereo with a large flip-out screen. When space is limited, it pays to use it wisely.

5. Cartronix

Android OS | 1 din with a large screen | Navigation

  • Price: ~250

Several sellers on Bol offer this Cartronix stereo with a flip-out screen. Only one includes a camera. You can mount it at the back of your car as a backup camera. When you reverse, it shows you where you're going. Handy!

Even more useful, and a real relief, is that this stereo runs on Android. Car manufacturers are good at building cars, but building software isn't their strong suit.

Best DAB+ car stereo

DAB+ is the new digital form of radio. The signal comes in over the air. A DAB radio sounds much stronger and clearer than a regular radio. You also get less interference, and the sound doesn't cut out when you drive into a tunnel.

But what do you need for DAB+ radio? You need an antenna. Not one you mount on the roof, but a DAB antenna that sticks to the inside of your window. Below our best DAB+ stereo, you'll also find the best DAB antenna in our tests. Don't worry, though: in most cases, the antenna comes with your stereo.

6. Pioneer SPH-DA230DAB

2 DIN | Fits neatly into your dashboard | DAB+

  • Price: ~350

Pioneer SPH-DA230DAB

The Pioneer SPH-DA230DAB fits perfectly into your car's 2DIN opening (10cm x 18cm). You can connect your steering wheel controls, backup camera and, of course, your speakers. It also gives you a complete hands-free car kit. Your phone connects automatically via Bluetooth when you get in, and you can take incoming calls hands-free. Ideal.

But the reason this stereo earns a spot on this list is, of course, its excellent DAB+ radio. The audio signal comes in over the air, delivering very high sound quality.

Best DAB+ car stereo antenna

Yes, this is a bit of an outsider. An unusual pick for this list. But we received so many questions about car DAB antennas that we decided to include our top pick.

For DAB+, you need a separate antenna. Not one that mounts on the roof, but a small receiver that sticks to the inside of your windshield.

DAB receiver antenna that sticks to your windshield

Sometimes a DAB+ receiver comes with your stereo, but certainly not always. We tested one, and it worked very well.

7. Pioneer CA-AN-DAB.001 antenna

DAB+ reception | Essential for your DAB+ radio

  • Price: €15

Antenna

You place the antenna in a corner at the bottom of your windshield. The downside is that you need to open up your dashboard. That's because you'll want to hide the cable connecting the antenna to your DAB radio behind it. But rest assured: opening your dashboard and hiding a cable like this is almost always easier than you think. The antenna is very affordable and does its job well. Plus, you get great sound in your car as soon as it's installed.

Best Pioneer car stereo

Pioneer has been pioneering in the radio market for years. It's far from the only player now, but Pioneer remains an established name. Many people swear by it and won't consider another brand for their car stereo.

8. Pioneer DMH-A240DAB

2 DIN | Bluetooth | DAB+ | Best-looking screen | Bluetooth mic | Touchscreen | Smartphone holder included

  • Price: ~200

The DMH-A240DAB is one of Pioneer's more recent models. It's a very well-equipped stereo: DAB+, Bluetooth, a DAB antenna, an included smartphone holder and a Bluetooth microphone. It also has a backup camera input. You can install a camera or connect your car's existing one.

And the screen is simply excellent. It's a 6.2 inch HQ display. Perfect for viewing your backup camera feed, but also for playing YouTube videos or just using navigation. We are still in a car, after all.

Pioneer is known for good car stereos, but this model is especially well-equipped. Just remember that it's a double din (2 din).

Best car stereo for iPhone

With Apple CarPlay, your iPhone effectively takes over your stereo's screen. That makes relevant apps easy to use in the car. Your iPhone connects to Apple CarPlay automatically. Ideal if you use an iPhone.

9. Boscer 1Din car stereo

With CarPlay | With Android Car | Backup camera included | Flip-out screen | 1 DIN

  • Price: 290

This Boscer 1Din car stereo is a 1 DIN unit, but its flip-out screen still gives you a spacious interface. The stereo connects directly to your iPhone via Apple CarPlay. You can also use Android Auto, the Android equivalent.

The advantage is that you can adjust all your settings on your iPhone. Remember how fiddly it always is to adjust the equalizer on the stereo itself? Frustrating! Stereo manufacturers are good at making stereos, but the software, interface and therefore the user experience are often terrible. Apple CarPlay helps solve that, as does Android Auto.

Beyond that, this stereo has more useful features. There's the backup camera that's included with the stereo. You also get a small microphone to install in your car.

You can choose a motorized or non-motorized version. The motorized version comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. That's this version.

Best budget car stereo

You can pick up a car stereo for just €40. And yes, that can include Bluetooth, hands-free calling and other useful features. But some of these stereos are truly terrible. Others are surprisingly good. Choose carefully!

10. Strex car stereo

Very affordable | Bluetooth | Hands-free calling | 1 din

  • Price: 34

Budget car stereo

Honestly, when this stereo arrived and we hooked it up in our car, our expectations were low. As an editor, I normally use a JVC stereo that costs around €100. I used this Strex car stereo for a week, and I have to say: it does everything my JVC does. The only downside for me is that my JVC came with a wired microphone I could neatly tuck away. The Strex didn't include one.

All about car stereos

You buy a car stereo because factory-fitted units are often very limited. Maybe you want to stream music via Bluetooth or use Google Maps instead of the built-in navigation that's already sent you the wrong way several times.

Or you want to use Apple CarPlay & Android Auto. Or add a backup camera to your old car. A stereo upgrade makes all of that possible. But there are a few things to know about car stereos. You can't just buy any unit. In many cases, it won't work in your car.

Best car stereo

Do I need a 1 DIN or 2 DIN car stereo?

Car stereos come in 2 sizes: 1 DIN and 2 DIN.

1 DIN and 2 DIN, single din or double din

These are the dimensions of 1 DIN and 2 DIN:

  • 1 DIN: 5cm x 18cm
  • 2 DIN: 10cm x 18cm

Check which size you have before buying a stereo.

Have a 1 DIN opening but want a large screen like a 2 DIN? You have 2 options:

  1. Modify your dashboard. You can often buy a different dashboard for your car model to create a double din opening. Then you can buy a double din stereo.
  2. Buy a stereo with a flip-out screen. You keep the narrow 1 DIN opening in your dashboard but get the benefit of a large screen, just like a 2 DIN.

Buying a car stereo

Which car stereo has a shallow mounting depth?

Car stereos are getting shorter. Why? The CD player was the main reason stereos needed such deep housings. And it's slowly disappearing from car stereos. Rightly so! CDs and driving were never a great match. On a bumpy road, the CD would skip 10 times.

The benefit of a shorter stereo is that it's easy to install. The outside of the housing often has an extra slide-out bracket for added support. Many car dashboards, especially those from before 2012, still have a deep opening. A stereo with a shallow mounting depth may not sit securely in it. Extending the housing slightly makes the stereo much more secure in the dashboard.

Retro car stereos

Classic retro car stereo

A beautiful classic car with a radio that no longer works. You can't just put a flashy modern Japanese Bluetooth stereo in it! That would be sacrilege.

Don't worry: you can find car stereos with a beautifully old-fashioned look. They'll look right at home in your classic car.

Retro car stereo

This is one example of a retro car stereo. Other styles are available too, so you can choose the right stereo for your classic car.

Car stereos with a screen

You can buy a car stereo with a good-looking screen. There are 2 options:

  • A 2 DIN with a large screen
  • A 1 DIN with a flip-out screen

It's nice to have a screen in your dashboard that displays your radio. These stereos come with or without a touchscreen. A screen also gives you several useful options:

  • A clear overview of your radio stations
  • Watching videos
  • Viewing your backup camera feed
