Recording with a Bluetooth earbuds microphone

You want to record audio from your Bluetooth earbuds' microphone and save the clip on your phone (Android or iPhone) or laptop (Windows or Mac), for example. How do you do that? This article shows you how.

How do you want to record from your earbuds' mic?

Record your earbuds' microphone with a smartphone

Record audio from your wireless earbuds' microphone using your phone. You can do this with an iPhone, but not with an Android phone.

🎤 Do people have trouble hearing you on calls? You're in the right place! Below, we'll explain how to record a voice clip with your earbuds. Then listen back to check whether your earbuds' microphone really sounds bad.

Record Bluetooth earbuds using an Android phone (such as Samsung)

You can't record a clip from your Bluetooth earbuds' microphone using your Android phone. It's that simple.

I've tried everything, but if you want to record a voice clip and only have an Android phone, your best option is to throw your Android phone out the window and connect your earbuds to your laptop via Bluetooth.

Actually, there is a way to record Bluetooth microphone audio on your Android phone: the Cinema FV-5 app. It's designed for video makers, and it does let you change the microphone source.

So you can record your Bluetooth audio, but it automatically records video too. You can't turn that off.

If you know an Android audio recording app that lets you record a clip from your Bluetooth earbuds, let us know by email and, if you'd like, we'll mention you or your website on this page as a thank-you.

Record your AirPods microphone using an iPhone

Recording audio from your Bluetooth earbuds' microphone is much easier on an iPhone.

You can use Apple's own app:

Voice Memos (sometimes called 'Dictafoon' in Dutch)

To record audio from your Bluetooth earbuds (such as AirPods) on an iPhone, follow these steps:

  1. Connect your earbuds to your iPhone via Bluetooth
  2. Open the Voice Memos app
  3. Check the top right to see if your earbuds are connected
  4. Press the red record button

In short, recording a Bluetooth audio clip is much easier on an iPhone than on Android.

💡Want to check that you're actually recording your earbuds' mic, not your iPhone's mic? While recording, say a long "aaaaaaaaaaaah" and move your phone closer, farther away, then closer again. Does the sound get loud, quiet, then loud again? If so, your phone's microphone is recording the audio, not your Bluetooth earbuds.

Other apps also let you record your Bluetooth earbuds' mic on your iPhone. But why use another app instead of Apple's built-in one? Exactly, I can't think of a good reason either.

Record wireless earbuds using a laptop

The easiest way is to connect your earbuds to your laptop. First, turn off Bluetooth on your phone. Otherwise, your earbuds will keep connecting to your phone automatically.

Windows

Connect your earbuds to your laptop: Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Connect.

Connect your earbuds to your laptop

Then open the Windows Sound Recorder app. Select the correct microphone source: your earbuds or headphones. Press the red record button.
