AirPods Pro fall out of your ears - And don't fit: solved

Your AirPods Pro fall out because they don't fit properly. Sound familiar? It's frustrating, especially for such expensive earbuds. The problem is their oval shape. I had the same problem and found a fix. Here's how to get your AirPods to stay in place.

In this article

The problem is with the AirPods Pro ear tips

AirPods Pro have an oval ear tip. That's the tip attached to the earbud, the part that goes into your ear. Apple actually promoted this as a major advantage. The ear canal isn't perfectly round either, went the sales pitch at launch.

But in practice, the earbuds often fall out. That's a shame, because they still cost around €200. If they fall out and get damaged, you're losing €200. A real waste, especially since AirPods Pro are otherwise really good earbuds.

We've found that the oval ear tips leave too much room for vertical movement. They can still move around too much. That means they don't grip inside your ear.

Make sure you use the right size ear tips

The first solution is also the easiest, so let's start there. AirPods Pro come with 3 sizes of ear tips. Choose a size that's just a little too big. Definitely not too small.

Ear tips that are too small leave that extra room to move. And the noise canceling won't work either, but that's another story.

You want ear tips that are slightly larger than your ear canal, so the earbuds can grip securely.

Foam ear tips for AirPods Pro

If none of the ear tip sizes solve the problem, your best option is to buy foam ear tips. These are memory foam attachments made specifically for AirPods Pro.

These foam ear tips are shaped to fit AirPods Pro exactly. We used to source ear tips from another manufacturer, but they didn't stay securely attached to the AirPods Pro. Sometimes they stayed in your ear when you took the earbuds out. These ear tips clip securely onto the mounting rim of the AirPods Pro.

More importantly, the memory foam slowly expands in your ear, adapting precisely to its shape. The ear tips feel comfortable and grip inside your ear canal. That keeps your AirPods Pro from falling out.

AirPods falling out while running

Want to run with your AirPods? Many people find it tricky. AirPods aren't ideal running earbuds to begin with. We've previously put together a list of the best earbuds for running. AirPods Pro fall out of your ears while you run.

AirPods Pro for running

There are two reasons why AirPods and AirPods Pro aren't perfect for running.

  1. The shape of the whole earbud.
Their shape makes it easy for the earbuds to work their way out of your ears, especially when running puts their fit to the test. Imagine the jolt each earbud gets with every step, sometimes for 5 or 10 kilometers. You can get earbuds with an ear hook that wraps around your ear. Those are guaranteed to stay in place.
  2. Ear tips that sit too loosely instead of gripping.
Again, the AirPods Pro ear tip is the culprit. Earbuds with oval ear tips tend to pop out of your ears. That's why foam ear tips for AirPods Pro can help. They grip securely inside your ear and stop the thud of each step from reverberating. Handy!
