SoundPEATS TrueFree 2 Review: Perfect earbuds for the active

SoundPEATS is one of the brands that usually comes to mind when we think of affordable earbuds. With the emphasis of affordability, the SoundPEATS TrueFree 2 came to fruition. The said wireless Bluetooth earphones are one of the cheapest earbuds you can find on the market. However, do not let its price fool you. Despite its pricing, you will be surprised with its performance.

So, the question is, how did SoundPEATS make these earbuds so competitive? You can read that in this review.

Pros and Cons

These are the advantages and disadvantages of the SoundPEATS TrueFree 2. This way you can immediately see whether these earbuds are suitable for you.

Sound from the SoundPEATS TrueFree 2

The sound quality of the SoundPEATS TrueFree 2 is amazing considering its price. It may be a little more expensive compared to most of QCY earbuds but the performance you get from the TrueFree 2 is worth every penny.

In terms of mid-tones, it's definitely there and that is something you will not usually find on most earbuds at this price range.

Sound quality score: 8/10

SoundPEATS are well known for their higher tones, but they were able to make the TrueFree 2 capable of mixing in mid and lower tones just right. Considering its price, this earbud is not something to be reckon with.

Despite its performance and quality, the TrueFree 2 is far from perfect. For the company to be able to place the TrueFree 2 at a competitive price, they had to cut a few for it to happen. Such cuts are obvious with the lack of touch controls, inferior chipset, and mediocre microphone.

Microphone: you can make good calls with the SoundPEATS TrueFree 2

It is of course important that you can make good calls with your earbuds. Nothing is more annoying than finding out after your purchase that no one can hear you. Especially if you really have something interesting to say. It would be a shame if, because of a bad microphone, no one gets to know all the interesting things you have to say.

No, we don't want that. That is why we extensively test the microphone of all earbuds that we review.

We therefore also tested the SoundPEATS TrueFree 2. Would SoundPEATS have cut back on the mic to offer a good price for this TrueFree 2? Listen and judge for yourself:

The low tones are more difficult to hear. Those are the tones that die first with less good microphones. This is also the case with the TrueFree 2.

Microphone score: 6/10

You can be heard during telephone conversations. Maybe not in depth, but word for word you can be understood. And that is the minimum requirement. Hence this figure.

Curious about the earbuds with the best microphone? We made a comparison with all sound clips.

Do you really want to use these earbuds mainly for calling and video conferencing? Then you better buy another set.

For comparison, this is a fragment of earbuds with a very good microphone: the Eardopes B6 Pro.

Anyway, those are earbuds from 79 euros and directly the best tested microphone of earbuds up to 100 euros. So yes, you pay for it too.

Fit: how do the SoundPEATS TrueFRee 2 fit?

The TrueFree have ear fins. These are fins (like the fins of a fish) that sit between your ear. It sounds uncomfortable, but the fit of the TrueFree 2 is very comfortable.

The earbuds (through the fins) are securely clamped in your ear, without squeezing your ear annoyingly. Due to the 2 touch points (on the one hand the ear tips that go into your ear and on the other hand the ear fins that click between your ear cup), these earbuds cannot be removed.

Fit: 8/10

Suitable for Sports

This makes these earbuds extremely suitable for on the road and during sports. You can also run well with it. The earbuds really don't fall out of our ears.

Of course it has to be said that each ear is ergonomically different. So the fact that they click well in our ears does not guarantee that they will fit in every ear. But it must be said that we have fairly average ears.

Operation of the earbuds

The short answer: The handling is bad.

The long answer: The TrueFree 2 have buttons. And let's put it first: buttons can work very well. Think of the Jabra Elite 85t of around 200 euros. These are earbugs with buttons. And that works wonderfully.

The requirement for buttons is that you press the buttons easily. Because you can imagine: the earbuds are directly in your ear canal. When you press on the earbud, you press something into your ear canal.

These SoundPEATS TrueFree 2 have buttons that you can hardly press. You have to press really hard on the earbuds (and therefore on your ear canal) to press the buttons. Just super annoying!

Operation score: 4/10

So this is an example of something that SoundPEATS has cut back on. Touch operation is more expensive to produce. But they could have made these buttons smoother so easily. Then it was no problem. But this ... This is just painful.

Every time you want to turn the earbuds up or down, you have to press the earbug twice. And that has to be so hard that you have to press with your thumb. It is almost impossible with your index finger. And every time you push the earbud almost into your ear through your ear canal.

No, we have stopped using the buttons. You better grab your phone to adjust the volume.

How does the touch control of the SoundPEATS TrueFree 2 work?

Calling: record / hang up

2x

3x Voice assist / Siri Voice assist / Siri

If you press hard enough, the cup will be pressed. And then it works. With a lot of pain and effort. But especially with a lot of pain. Okay, we'll stop complaining.

How good is the battery of the SoundPEATS TrueFree 2

The earbuds have 43 mAh per earbud. Incidentally, that is nowhere indicated. Not even on the SoundPEATS website. So we did our research and called SoundPEATS in China (seriously).

And well, 43mAh is fine. Nothing special.

Battery score: 6/10

The charging case has 380mAh. That is also not something special. It appears that 380mAh batteries are made in giga numbers in China. Because many of these earbuds have exactly 380mAh in the charging case.

Charging box

Where the more expensive earbuds from SoundPEATS had a matte charging case, this set of TrueFree 2 earbuds has a smooth hard plastic charging case. That gives a slightly cheaper feeling when you have it in your hand. But these are still fine charging boxes

There are four battery indicator lights in the case. They glow when you place the earbuds in the case. This way you know whether the earbuds are full or empty. That's handy.

Conclusion: are the SoundPEATS TrueFree 2 any good?

Review
Sound 8
Microphone 6
Fit 8
Battery 6
Service 4
Stability 7

The SoundPEATS TrueFree 2 is perfect if you want a little more quality than the cheapest earbuds on the market (like those from QCY & Haylou). The sound is really amazing for this price. Furthermore, the fit is good and especially aimed at use during sports.

Are there any disadvantages to this SoundPEATS TrueFree 2? Hell yes. The service is awful. You have to press hard on the buttons to press the buttons and that hurts because you press the earbud hard into your ear canal. You can operate the earbuds better with your phone. The microphone is sub-par, but that in itself makes sense for the price. Budget earbuds often cut back on the microphone. If you want a better microphone, you better go for the more expensive SoundPEATS or for the Eardopes B6 Pro.

Alternatives

SoundPEATS TrueFree 2 vs SoundPEATS Garden Engine 3 SE

The Truengine 3 SE are slightly (slightly more than ten euros) more expensive. And for that you get a little more quality. Especially when it comes to the chipset, microphone and touch controls.

SoundPEATS Truengine 3 SE vs. TrueFree 2

Benefits of SoundPEATS Truengine 3 SE listed:

  • Touch operation. No annoying push buttons that you have to press into your ear with a lot of force.
  • Slightly better sound. But the difference in sound is not that great.
  • Slightly faster connection with dual drivers (both earbuds of the 3 SE connect to your device). With the TrueFree, 1 earbud is the 'transmitter' between your device and the earbuds. That makes the 3 SE faster and slightly more stable.
  • The microphone makes a world of difference. The Truengine 3 SE has been tested by us as one of the best microphones.
